Dealing With Cough The Natural Way

Dealing With Cough The Natural Way

by Peter Salazar

Many respiratory infections and ailments have cough as a main symptom; traditional medicine usually prescribes antibiotics, but as you may know already, antibiotics cannot be administered on an indefinite period of time as they are harmful and toxic for the body. However, there are all sorts of natural remedies, easy to use and very much within reach at home. Without any side effects, plants combinations may bring cough soothing particularly when facing the exhaustion of the immune system.

Ginger is one powerful antiseptic and great natural remedy used in the treatment of cold and flu cough. Part of traditional herbalist medicine, ginger can be used fresh for dry cough; sprinkle some salt on fresh ginger and chew it. Or you can make a mixture of ginger juice and honey in equal proportions and take three teaspoonfuls every day in order to alleviate persistent cough. Another way of using ginger as an anti-cough remedy is under tea form; add it in the boiling water just a few minutes before the rest of the tea plants, then let the infusion cool and drink it warm.

Ribwort plantain extract also works wonders in the treatment of persistent dry cough. Usually used as syrup made of the herb’s juice, it has a soothing and disinfectant action at the level of the respiratory system. In association with fir-tree extract, honey and menthol, the ribwort plantain stimulates expectoration and the mucus secretion, which marks the first step to curing a bad cough. It can be used for children and adults as well, with the only mention that people who suffer from diabetes should be careful with the sugar content in the ribwort plantain syrup.

Furthermore, eucalyptus essential oil is another natural remedy for cough; it can be used topically for chest rubbing or in inhalations. If you choose the steam treatment with vapor inhalation, you should do it in the evening before going to bed. Add five or six drops of eucalyptus oil to a liter of boiling water and keep your head over the vessel. Inhale deeply through your mouth.
